Institute of Optoelectronics and Nanomaterials (ION) at Nanjing University of Science and Technology was established by Professor Haibo Zeng in 2013. Supported by the national key discipline of material science at NUST, ION is an important part of Key Laboratory of Functional Nanocrystals, Ministry of Education. ION is dedicated to the education and research on semiconducting nanomaterials and related optoelectronic devices.

People: ION has established a multidisciplinary research group combining experimental and theoretical expertise. It consists of more than 30 students and faculty members, including 8 teachers, 18 graduate students, 3 postdocs. Obedience to the spirit: integrity, rigor, challenge, and innovation, our group has developed detailed research regulations and promotion mechanisms to inspire the wisdom and creativity of every group member. The group was named as Excellent Working Team of Science and Technology by NUST in 2013.

Facilities and Collaborations: ION has equipped complete, specialized facilities for material preparations, device fabrications and characterizations. The lab covers an area of 300 square meters and has established a systematic experiment platform for optoelectronic nanomaterial research, including the UV-Visible-NIR spectrometer, deep-ultraviolet photoluminescence spectrometer, ultraviolet photoelectric detection system, the liquid laser ablation system, etc. Combined with the advanced equipments (e.g. aberration-corrected HRTEM) at Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience, we already possess the world-class material research facilities. ION has intensive international collaborations with many world-famous universities and research institutes, including National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, Japan), Universität Karlsruhe (German), Deakin University (Australia), City University of Hong Kong etc.

Research Fundings and Achievements: ION has undertaken 10 imported funded projects, including National Key Scientific Research Project, The National Outstanding Youth Fund etc. The total funds is over 10 million RMBs. The group members have published more than 200 papers in SCI journals, over 20 papers in high impact factor journals (IF>10) such as Advanced Materials、Advanced Functional Materials、Angew Chem、Nano Letters、JACS、ACS Nano etc. and have been cited over 5,000 times. Our works have been highlighted by academic media such as NPG Asia Materials and NanoWerk. Dr. Zeng was awarded First-class Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2012.

Research Areas: Motivated by the intensive demands for low-cost, high-performance optoelectronic materials and devices in information and energy fields, ION is mainly focused on two groups of novel nanomaterials, doped semiconducting nanocrystals and atomic layer two-dimensional crystals. We aim to develop synthesis and assembly methods for high quality nanocrystals, to study the electronic structure and optoelectronic properties of nanocrystals, which are affected by dopants, defects, surface and interface (through theoretical and experimental methods combined), and meanwhile to explore prospective applications of novel high-performance optoelectronic devices based on nanocrystals (e.g. transparent conductive flims, photodectors, solar cells, while light LEDs). The main research areas include:

1) Experiments and calculations of optoelctronic characteristics of nanocrystals with dopants and defects;
2) Nanocrystals based ultraviolet photodetectors and white LEDs;
3) Optoelectronic properties and device applications of atomic layer two-dimensional crystals.
